Britain’s largest warship, the aircraft carrier queen elizabeth will visit the port of Palma later this month as he returns home after a hugely successful first deployment to the Indian Ocean and Pacific.
Weighing at 65,000 tons it is not known if it is too big for the port of Palma and will have to anchor in the bay. It is equipped with two squadrons of F35 stealth jets, one is a joint Royal Air Force / Fleet Air Arm unit of 617 “The Dambusters” squadron, one of the most famous units in RAF history. and the other is a US Marine Corps squadron. Apart from that, she has a number of Merlin helicopters on board. Parts of the ships were built across Great Britain and assembled in Rosyth, Scotland. Not only is she the largest Royal Navy ship of all time, it is also one of the largest ships built in Britain.
But the queen elizabeth do not travel alone. In his working group, there is two Royal Navy Daring class destroyers, each costing one billion pounds, two Type 23 frigates and two support ships. It is not known how many of these ships will arrive in Palma. The combined crews of all ships in the group exceed 3,500 and they are obviously looking forward to their stay in Mallorca after a long deployment which was hit by the Covid pandemic and meant they were unable to go to land in some places like Singapore and Tokyo.
The queen elizabeth, unlike American aircraft carriers, has two towers; one to control the ship and one to supervise the flight operations taking place on board. He will remain in the service of the Royal Navy for at least 50 years and will be the backbone of all future operations of the Royal Navy. Its F35 jets are capable of vertical takeoffs and landings like the Sea Harrier they replaced. According to the Royal Navy, the queen elizabeth is the vessel most capable of flying the white flag.
