Electric Aviation Group develops 90-seat zero-emission planes


Electric Aviation Group is developing the first large-scale, “true” zero-emission regional aircraft powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Jenny Southan reports

UK-based Electric Aviation Group (EAG) is working with aerospace engineering firm Atkins to accelerate development of H2ERA, a zero-emission regional aircraft powered by hybrid hydrogen-electric technology.

The partnership allows EAG to access Atkins’ “extensive aerospace capabilities and resources as it advances its proprietary hybrid electric and hydrogen technologies.”

On track for launch in 2030, H2ERA aims to become the world’s first “true” zero-emission regional mass transit aircraft with a capacity of 90 passengers. Unlike biofuels, which still emit greenhouse gases, hydrogen fuel cells do not emit carbon dioxide (CO2) or nitrogen oxides (NOx).

The H2ERA aircraft will also be 50% more cost effective than equivalent-sized turboprop airplanes and 65% quieter, making it more peaceful for passengers.
