How an MRO company is creatively overcoming the industry’s talent shortage

Fresh off the conclusion of the MRO Americas 2022 Aviation Week, Host Grant Harrel from the podcast “Are we there yet?” sitting with cam murphythe president of FEAM Aero — an aircraft maintenance company. The couple discussed the aviation industry and how the global pandemic has greatly affected various aspects of the field. But more importantly, how Murphy and FEAM survived amid tough changes.

Thanks to the securing of new partnerships and relevant planning, FEAM Aero has managed to develop its activities nationally and internationally and has considerably improved its relevance in aeronautical services.

“In the last six months, we’ve acquired two companies in Europe. Really, the strategic plan was that the market was depressed, and we thought, ‘Let’s find companies that kind of fit our same culture,’ and we were able to find two phenomenal organizations that really remind us of when we started,” Murphy said.

In addition to the problems caused by the pandemic, many workers have left the industry to retire. But the lack of new incoming workers has exacerbated the shortage. However, Murphy said the solution to this is more schooling and training. In partnership with a flight school, FEAM Aéro supports the construction of a new aviation school to welcome new workers.

“The goal is just to really increase that pipeline…to work with other A&P schools in the area to figure out how we can produce more individuals to get involved in aerospace,” Murphy said.

Another key success factor for FEAM Aero has been employee retention. Despite the initial rise in unemployment, Murphy said the company remains adamant about not letting anyone go and praised employee morale. By choosing to invest instead, they found a silver lining.

He also said it is a sign of pride when he can point to a generation of parents working for FEAM Aero.

Murphy also said his company’s prioritization of employee care remains a top priority. He said he believes entrepreneurship and success stem from effectively meeting employee needs.

“For us, we are in people’s business. At the very end of the day, I always say people are at the heart of what we do,” Murphy said.
