Connectivity, a sense of belonging and affinity to the mission and to one another, is an essential key to advancing diversity and inclusion. True inclusion allows everyone to fully contribute to the accomplishment and success of the mission. As a key supporting function in projecting rapid global mobility from the West Coast, many event attendees were first impressed with the flight line.
Three instructors from Travis Maintenance Training University linked the flight functions of military personnel to the projection of the C-5M Super Galaxy, C-17 Globemaster III and KC-10 Extender weapon systems by offering an exterior and interior tour of the KC – ten.
Anxious faces walking up the stairs to the plane and the many questions asked were outward signs of the bond developed with the enthusiastic instructors who highlighted the capabilities of the plane needed to support the mission.
An aviator’s comment: “Seeing other Airmen doing their jobs really gave me a picture of the mission, that it’s not just a motto or a statement” reminds me of the value of an image. A picture is worth a million words and Senior Master Sgt. Marquita Glover, 60th Air Mobility Wing, military personnel flight chief and Tech Sgt. Matthew Smith, the non-commissioned officer in charge of the KC-10 instructor element, put people in the spotlight in an effort to foster connection and inclusion.
Inclusion unleashes the potential and the fullest contribution to the success of the group, but is inclusion possible without a real connection? We think no! Let’s continue to connect and move towards a more inclusive atmosphere.
