William David Doell | Obituary

A celebration of the life of William “David” Doell, 80, will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Church in the Valley in Canyon Lake, 14181 Farm-to-Market 306 in Canyon City. A burial at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery will take place at a later date.

Mr. Doell died on February 24, 2022, after a battle with lung cancer.

He was born in New Braunfels.

David grew up in Fischer. He attended school until eighth grade at the one-room Fischer Store school. He attended high school in Blanco, San Marcos and New Braunfels and graduated from Canyon High School in 1960.

He had resided in Killeen since 1971. He spent over 22 years in the US Army as a helicopter pilot and helicopter test pilot with over 3,000 flying hours, earning the rank of CW4.

David has done two tours in Vietnam and two tours in Germany. In Vietnam, he flew UH-1 Hueys on his first tour and an AH-1 Cobra gunship on the second tour. He won many awards and medals during his military career, including the Master Army Aviator Award, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and 14 Air Medals.

After earning an associate’s degree from Central Texas College and retiring from the military, he briefly sold real estate. Then David returned to work in aircraft maintenance and was employed by DynCorp Aerospace Operations for 11 years as a maintenance supervisor.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 50 years. He volunteered at Habitat for Humanity in Killeen and served on the board for eight years. He was an integral part of an Alzheimer’s disease support group in Harker Heights for many years. David had attended Maxdale Cowboy Church for the past few years. He was particularly fond of vintage cars, motorcycles, fishing and hunting.

David was predeceased by his parents, Monte and Maurine Doell; his sister, Marilyn (Doell) Maroney; his wife of 46 years Sue (Lester) Doell; and a grandson, Logan Doell.

He is survived by a special friend and companion, Marion Clark; his daughter Teresa (Doell) Lawrence; son Troy Doell; her daughter Lyndi (Doell) Moon and her husband Scott Moon; granddaughter Shaylene (Doell) Hernandez; and grandson Mason Moon. David also had five great-grandchildren: Jonathan Doell, Aliyah Hernandez, Cheyenne Doell, James Doell and Olivia Hernandez. He also leaves many good friends and neighbors.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the caregivers at Morada Temple and a special thank you to Melissa and the team at Amedisys Hospice Care. The family also enjoys the care of oncologist, Dr. Sripriya Santhanam, from Baylor Scott & White Medical Center and Killeen Cancer Center.

A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen.
